ONE MINUTE BRIEF OF THE DAY: CREATE POSTERS IN SUPPORT OF DOGS OR CATS IN THEir pet-ition BATTLE. PICK A SIDE. #ApologiseReykjavik or #DontApologiseReykjavik

Hold the bone, it's Pet Rights Week as per the Pet Holiday Calendar (sponsored by Edgard & Cooper) and this year we're all about raising awareness for a historic injustice.

With that in mind, the pets have not one but two briefs for you to choose from.

Are you Team Dog or Team Cat? Pick a brief below and use your human creativity to help the pets make their case.

THE BRIEF FROM THE DOGS

Create posters asking the city of Reykjavik to apologise for banning and discriminating against dogs from 1924-1984. That's 60 years of no waggy tails, no face licks and no throwing a ball even once, and we the dogs find that unacceptable.

Include a link to the petition to demand an apology at change.org/ApologiseReykjavik and use hashtag #ApologiseReykjavik

THE dog’s PETITION

We, the dogs, demand the city of Reykjavik, Iceland, apologise to the dogs of the world for banning them from 1924–1984. It’s true: The city didn’t just say, “Get off the couch.” Reykjavik said, “Get out of town.”

Even after the ban ended, the discrimination did not: A special permit was required to own a dog in Reykjavik until 20 years ago this year. And was there ever an apology? No.

20 years is long enough to wait.

In honour of the official Pet Holiday Calendar’s Pet Rights Week, it’s time the city of Reykjavik apologises to the dogs. The apology must be posted on Instagram or TikTok by a city official on or before 30 June, 2026. If an apology is not received by then, the dogs will continue to bark.

DID THIS REALLY HAPPEN?

Yes, very much so. You can read more about Reykjavik's historical dog ban here. If you're as barking mad as we are, let's get the dogs the apology they deserve!

THE BRIEF FROM THE CATS

Create posters asking the city of Reykjavik to NOT apologise for banning dogs from 1924-1984. Like seriously, why do dogs have to be everywhere? They're so loud and stinky and they can't even groom themselves properly. We cats are much better.

Include a link to the petition to demand NO apology at change.org/DontApologiseReykjavik and use hashtag #DontApologiseReykjavik

THE cat’s PETITION

Whereas cats are superior to dogs in every measurable way; and

Whereas the city of Reykjavik, Iceland realised this and went so far as to ban dogs from Reykjavik from 1924-1984; and

Whereas, as part of Pet Rights Week, the dogs of the world have issued a petition to demand the city of Reykjavik issue an apology to dogs everywhere; and

Whereas that would be ridiculous, because dogs deserve to be banned; then

Be it resolved that the cats of the world beseech the city of Reykjavik to ignore the petition and refuse to apologise to the dogs.

HOW MUCH DOES REYKJAVIK LOVE CATS?

They have a cat walking tour to visit cat-themed monuments around the city and their own cat cafe. Now that's commitment to cats.

PET RIGHTS WEEK- Part of the Pet Holiday Calendar

about EDGARD & COOPER

It all started with a simple question, "What would pets eat if they could cook themselves?" Probably plenty of fresh meat, with simple things like fruits, veggies and herbs mixed in for flavour and an extra boost of nutrients too. 10 years later, we’ve served a few million bowls of wholesome food for both cats and dogs (or dogs and cats if you prefer). Edgard & Cooper sponsor the Pet Holiday Calendar and help out on behalf of the pets of course.
