“The news of Ricky Hatton’s death hit me particularly hard.
He was a local hero to me and my friends & lived close to me and my family. We would see him in the pub with everyone and running up and down the roads of Hyde and Stockport. We followed his story and supported him in his big wins...and losses. Everyone felt like they knew him as he was so relatable and down-to-earth.
A working-class lad who achieved huge success but had his struggles.
A lot of which, came from the pressure that success itself brings and the highs and lows that comes along with that.
I’ve been there. I almost wasn’t here to write this...
I’ve seen family and friends there too.
I’ve sadly lost some of them.
That’s why I’m very proud to have the opportunity for me and my community to support this important cause today. The mission of the Ricky Hatton Foundation can make a difference in people’s lives and we can be ALL be part of that.”
ABOUT The Ricky Hatton Foundation
Ricky loved people, loved to talk, and above all, loved helping others. The Ricky Hatton Foundation will carry that spirit forward — supporting those facing their own fights with mental illness and ensuring that no one ever has to face those battles alone.
Our mission is to:
Raise awareness of mental health challenges
Remove the stigma that prevents people from speaking up
Educate and support through community programmes, outreach, and practical resources
Offer direct support through talking therapies
Be there, in the corner of those struggling with their mental health, so they know that no one has to fight this alone
Sport will be at the heart of this work. Just as Ricky used boxing to inspire people, the Foundation will use sport — boxing, football, and beyond — as a powerful vehicle to bring people together, spark conversation and drive positive change. We thank everyone from the world of boxing and sport who have already reached out and offered their support.
