Today is World Suicide Prevention Day and we’ve been working on a campaign, sparked by our last collaboration with Papyrus, to promote their emergency appeal and encourage donations so that they can ALWAYS be there for young people who need them. Because suicide doesn’t wait until morning.

We have directed and produced four films and a nationwide billboard campaign featuring brave volunteers and a powerful dramatisation of what could happen if PAPYRUS HOPELINE247 wasn’t able to stay open through the night, to answer calls, texts, emails and webchat messages. The campaign is also being supported by radio stations including BBC Manchester.

We’re calling on all the OMBLES to help spread this important message today.

  • HOPELINE247 is a free, confidential, and anonymous support service available via telephone, email, text, and webchat. It provides crucial assistance to young people under 35 experiencing suicidal thoughts, as well as giving help and advice to their concerned parents, carers, teachers, and friends. Key features of the helpline include:

    • BSL and Multi-Language Support – No other mental health helpline in the UK offers British Sign Language services alongside extensive language interpretation options.

    • HOPELINE Safety Plan – This innovative feature allows allows a young person to collaborate with an adviser and work out their own reasons for staying safe and techniques particular to them that work. They can access their safety plan any time after their initial conversation.

    • Debrief Support – This is a vital service for those who have encountered suicide first-hand, giving them a safe space to process their experience and receive guidance.

  • HOPELINE247 advisers want to work with people to understand why thoughts of suicide might be present. They also want to provide young people and concerned others with a safe space to talk through anything happening in their life that could be impacting on their or anyone else’s ability to stay safe.

  • The night-time shift had over 12,000 lifesaving interactions in 2024.

  • Average age of contact during night-time shift is 25-year-old.

  • 1518 safety plans created in 2024 and are viewed an average of 6 times. A third of these are created by people under the age of 19. Most Safety Plans are viewed between 10pm and 11pm.

  • 20% of all contacts are concerned others.

  • 50 debriefs provided in 2024.

  • Supported 74 police officers, ambulance workers, doctors and nurses who were experiencing thoughts of suicide and listed their profession as contributing factor to their thoughts of suicide.

Suicide is not a criminal act

When reporting suicide we urge you not to use the term ‘committed suicide’.

Changes made in the Suicide Act of 1961 decriminalised the act of suicide in the UK. The word ‘commit’ treats it as if it were still a crime, which perpetuates the stigma around suicide and is offensive to families and friends.

Reporting suicide

When reporting suicide please consider, not only the grief of family and friends of the deceased, but other vulnerable young people who may be feeling worthless and not coping with life at that time and for whom explicit descriptions of suicide method could offer a life escape route. It is well known that insensitive media reporting of suicide can prompt imitative behaviour. Evidence about the potential for imitative behaviour is strong.

After a two-year hiatus, The Drum is bringing back its infamously irreverent and boundary-pushing Chip Shop Awards this September. The relaunch comes at a pivotal moment for the advertising industry, which has recently faced controversies over authenticity and the growing presence of AI in awards submissions.

The tipping point for many came at the 2025 Cannes Lions, where the Creative Data Grand Prix was revoked after it was revealed that the case study films had been manipulated using AI. The incident has sparked intense debate across the industry, with Cannes Lions now moving to implement stricter rules to enforce truth, fairness, and transparency in award entries.

But these new boundaries could potentially come at a cost. While they aim to safeguard credibility, they risk stifling the more provocative, speculative and satirical ideas that don’t conform to traditional commissioning or client approval processes. As some creatives see it, the industry may be playing it too safe.

So we’re teaming up with the OMBLES for a special brief today to celebrate the return of the Chip Shop Awards.

And we’re taking it right back to the start. The reason it’s called the Chip Shop Awards is because of a poster for a local Chip Shop. It was brilliant. But it didn’t have a big brand, a big budget or a big audience.

Does that mean it’s not a big idea that deserves recognition though? That’s where the Chips come in…

The Drum’s Chip Shop Awards origins come from a true fish tale. Barnacles Fish & Chip Shop in Llandudno, Wales, was once the talk of London’s Soho when its ad campaign scooped a heap of awards. That campaign was the work of an advertising nobody. The client was his mother. His budget? Beer money. Get to know the whole story here and check out the video below.

About our Make Ageing Fair campaign

The 2025 Autumn Budget is a crucial opportunity for the UK Government to enact changes to the social security system to support older people in financial hardship. 

At Independent Age, we’re calling on the Chancellor to instigate solutions for older people in financial hardship in the Autumn Budget. We want to make ageing fair so that no older person faces financial hardship anymore. 

Right now, there are almost two million older people living in poverty across the UK. For many in this situation, every day is a struggle just to pay for the basics and survive. Many do not have a safety net, and it can feel like the systems they rely on are unfairly rigged against them. 

Spending later life in financial hardship isn’t inevitable, but too many older people have been dealt a bad hand. Whether from poor health, bereavement, or living on our own, some of us will encounter precarious finances. Who you are, how your health is and who you live with shouldn’t impact your prosperity in later life, but for too many, it does.

Things aren't getting any easier. Older people across England and Wales face a postcode lottery on their water bills, and these costs are continuing to rise. Up to 970,000 older people across the UK, who are entitled to Pension Credit, don't currently receive it and many are unaware of other financial support they’re entitled to. There are older people in our communities right now who struggle to afford even the cheapest private rents, fuelling constant worry. Pensioners in these difficult financial situations tell us they feel hidden and need a voice at the heart of policy decision making.

It's time to change that and make ageing fair, to ensure that all of us can experience our later years without feeling anxiety and fear of making ends meet each day. Our research projects the number of older people in poverty will double by 2040 if policies impacting older people on a low income stay as they are now. We need to act before that happens. 

It doesn't have to be this way. The UK Government can tackle poverty in later life before it gets even worse. We are therefore calling on them to:

  • Develop a take-up strategy for all financial entitlements that older people are entitled to, so they get the financial support they’re eligible for

  • Support older people in financial hardship by rolling out a national social tariff for water and significantly improving energy bill support

  • Uprate Local Housing Allowance so renters of all ages aren’t made to make up ever increasing shortfalls in their rent 

  • Introduce a Commissioner for Older People and Ageing 

We know that poverty doesn’t impact all older people equally and it’s time to change that. Together we can make ageing fair.

About the Album:

Healthy soil is a busy, noisy place. All the micro-organisms, worms, moles, even the fungi down there, are all moving to a beat of their very own. We recorded them, shared the sounds with some talented musicians and producers, and the result is in your hands. The original underground music.

The underground album offers a literal interpretation of the genre. Called “Soil Samples,” the extended play vinyl record features four musicians who created music from soil microbiome recordings.

Sound engineers from GAS Music in the UK spent weeks recording the lively vibrations made by organic soil, initially on a farm in Manchester. Too much ambient noise in the fields caused them to move tanks of soil and plants to the BBC Philharmonic’s recording studio where they could use an anechoic chamber specially designed to absorb sound waves.

They captured the soil sounds – which noisily ramped up sometimes like when the vegetation was watered – and then changed the frequency so it could be heard by people.

But what does soil and its “music” have to do with health? Soil microbiomes are connected to human gut biomes via the food grown in the ground and then eaten by people. The quality and diversity of the soil matters because “Noisy soil is healthy soil.”

The four-track “Soil Sample” promo album is launching soon with four artists including producer Mark Reeder of MFS Records and Derrick McKenzie who’s part of the popular band Jamiroquai. The clear vinyl EP was pressed with some of the actual organic soil from the research pressed into the vinyl. The tracks are also available on streaming audio channels including Spotify, Apple Music and YouTube Music.

Testicular cancer is highly treatable especially if caught early. Most of the time a lump or swelling on the testicle is the first symptom. About the BallChecker App

Our Ball Checker mobile app provides a few facts every guy and girl should know about testicular cancer as well as how to do a testicular self exam.

If you examine your testicles regularly, you will get to know what's normal and what's different. Always report any changes to your doctor without delay.

Why do self-exams

Testicular self-exams are important to notice changes in one’s testicles. By doing monthly testicular self-exams, you should become familiar with your testicles, thus making it easier to notice any changes.

Most testicular cancers are found by men themselves or their partner, very few are found by a physician. This is why it is so important to be familiar with what is normal and if you do notice any changes then see a doctor immediately.

Since there is no way to prevent testicular cancer, they key is catching it early and self-exams can be your best tool for early detection.

How to

It is best to do the testicular self-exam during or right after a warm shower or bath. The warmth relaxes the scrotum making the exam easier.

Don't be alarmed if one testicle seems slightly larger than the other, or if one testicle hangs lower than the other - that's normal.

You should also be aware that each normal testicle has a small, coiled tube called the epididymis that can feel like a small bump on the upper or middle outer side of the testis.

Normal testicles also contain blood vessels, supporting tissues, and tubes that carry sperm. Some men may confuse these with abnormal lumps at first. If you have any concerns, ask your doctor.

A testicle can get larger for many reasons other than cancer. For example, fluid can collect around the testicle to form a hydrocele. Or, the veins in the testicle can dilate and cause enlargement and lumpiness around the testicle. If your testicle seems different, have a doctor examine you to be sure you have one of these conditions and not a tumor. If anything finding a benign cause of your symptoms will bring peace of mind.

Remember to examine your testicles regularly - it’s recommended that you do it once a month, this way you will get to know what's normal and there is enough time in-between self-exams to notice any differences. Always report any changes to your doctor without delay.

OMB Stories: Heather Moore - "Everyone is creative. And everyone has a minute."

Well, it took quite a few years of me peeking from the shadows before I did my first OMB. There was just this minor issue of crippling self-doubt getting in my way. That and my proper full-time job. But now I am here, I am hooked.

Writing ads was my childhood dream job. It still is! Being creative (and winning) brings me joy like nothing else. I had an incredible 20 years in FMCG and hospitality, but the best bits were 100% spreadsheet-free. I took any chance to be creative, from research ideation to video scripts, email newsletters and naming giant cakes.

A few years ago, I was trying to help my son learn to ride his bike. It was not the warm and fuzzy experience you see in films. Anyway, I was talking to him (again) about being brave. Explaining that you still get scared as a grown-up, but sometimes you have to get on and do it anyway. So, he throws back, “Well, what are you too scared to do?” And it was this: jacking in my job, starting my own business, and doing what I now do and love every day.

A lightbulb moment, I realised I had been playing it safe for a long time, and my stabilisers needed to come off. I got a haircut (yes, actually, that was a big deal). I resigned from my sensible job and started my freelance copywriting business. And yes, my son can now ride a bike. And double yes, I am far too slow for him. And triple yes, I have more time for bike rides. That might be quadruple yes, but who’s counting?

I wanted to enter One Minute Briefs a bunch of times. But OMB was full of proper designers and established copywriters. And I couldn’t do much with Canva. And I am sh*t at drawing. So yeah, I felt intimidated. 

Five months after setting up my freelance copywriting business, I was eyeballs deep in website copy with a dollop of writer’s block. I decided to be brave again and thought, d’you know what? It doesn’t matter! It's not work. One Minute Briefs are just for me.

My First Entry

I finally took the leap and did my first OMB for UPAC! Not my best work, but it was a start. 4 (?) entries later, I won my first daily brief with an ad for roller skates. I was giddy!  Anyone who knows me will confirm I am competitive, and it meant a lot to me.

I have been OMBLING for about a year and a half, and I recommend it to everyone. I did every brief in 2024, even when I was on holiday, busy, or not a fan (I am looking at you, sprouts).

My favourite briefs?

My favourite briefs are the ones that feel personal or those that let me be really silly. I have won over 100 daily briefs and been on prize brief shortlists nearly 50 times. I even won two prize briefs, including getting my ad on the largest billboard in Europe 🙌.

It turns out winning isn't quite everything (IKR?!). The absolute cream on the top is more confidence, creativity and willingness to play.

Which briefs would I like to see on OMB?

Some of my favourite things are clients who pay on time, skittles, Bananagrams, murder mysteries, escape rooms, Green Day, Wagamama, Derbyshire, Queen, Softball Cricket, Taskmaster and Daniel Kitson. But maybe you get more out of the unusual suspects like estate agents, bagpipes or wigs.

One Minute Briefs isn’t about creating the most polished ads or ideas inspired by weeks of research and brand immersion. And it's not about knocking that either. It is about your own spontaneous, silly, emotional, punny, only-have-a-minute ideas for products or brands you wouldn’t usually get to work on.

I mean, everyone is creative. And everyone has a minute.
